This is the same McDonald’s where I get my flat whites on some mornings. Robbers in south Auckland are increasingly brazen. Thankfully, there are far fewer guns in New Zealand than in the US. Can you imagine south Auckland’s crime scene if the number of weapons per capita was like that of the US? Not good.
Robbers have held up a south Auckland McDonald’s with a crowbar in an unsuccessful bid to steal money. Two men entered the 24-hour restaurant, near Auckland International Airport, at 5.45am on Friday, police said. They threatened staff members before unsuccessfully attempting to gain access to tills and the safe.
Police detective senior sergeant Darrell Harpur said the men managed to steal an item of property from one of the staff members, before fleeing in a vehicle. No one was injured during the hold-up. The restaurant had been closed for most of the morning while police investigated, Harpur said. Police were reviewing the restaurant’s CCTV footage.
But what will that do? There are so many unsovled robberies right now, I can’t see how the backlog will be cleared.
